Arena Commander

(Citizen Star News) - 2014-06-02 - A very short update today:

Greetings Citizens,

We’re almost there! A weekend of hard testing revealed several blockers in the current Release Candidate. The team has worked to resolve these today, and believe we have a good build now. Our internal QA group will be testing it overnight tonight, with our next “go/no-go” meeting scheduled for early tomorrow morning. The good news is that we’re closer than ever, and our efforts over the weekend had the team resolving issues on the fly as they were found by QA.

We will update you tomorrow morning (US time) on the results of the go/no-go meeting.

NOTE: (This article started as a news update but became something more. I slapped the Blog tag on it to indicate that part of this post is personal opinion and analysis, and am adding this note to make sure that is clear. - Ed.)

(Citizen Star News/Citizen Ed) - 2014-05-31 - Recent progress reports and chat comments are leading us to believe the critical and blocking bugs holding up the v0.8 release of the (pre) Alpha of Arena Commander (previously known as the Star Citizen Dog Fighting Module) are all resolved. The weekend will spent testing and seeing if any new bugs have been introduced or old bugs reappeared.

UPDATE: Ben Lesnick was a guest of Guard Frequency today. He's passed along from Travis Day that no new blockers have cropped up. A few new bugs, but nothing too bad so far. Go/No-Go meeting is slated for Monday morning.

This will be a critical test of the production process. We keep hearing about "change one thing and several other things break", which is quite concerning. Hopefully in this tightly change controlled environment, this can be kept to a minimum. We could potentially see a release early next week. This would be a relief to people involved with The Next Great Starship as the pressure in the live broadcast with an audience on June 7th would likely be not desirable.

Why is this so hard? Why are people upset about a few day delay? What does this mean about the future?

(Citizen Star News) - 2014-05-28 - Sad news fellow Citizen Stars, Arena Commander will not be available tomorrow as planned. We heard from Ben Lesnick on twitter a bit earlier that the "Programmers are heads down working some big issues right now; we'll have a go/no-go meeting in a few hours." And then a bit later, Chris released a letter informing us the no-go state was the result.

Although no new date has been announced, Ben followed up in chat later, "Days, not weeks.... We'll have a new release candidate tomorrow and will evaluate that."

(Citizen Star News) - 2014-05-28 - Eric "Wingman" Peterson and his trusty sidekick Rob Irving, host the penultimate (second to last) episode of the Wingman's Hangar. (Notes after the jump!)

(Citizen Star News) - 2014-05-24 - Friday brought good news to would be Star Citizens, $44 Million funding goal reached, and perhaps even more significantly, a status report published declaring that all milestones were being met and the Arena Commander (the release formerly known as the Dogfighting Module) alpha v.8 remains on target for a May 29th release. The development work has been declared "pencils down", feature complete and only "show-stopping" bugs being fixed between now and release on that branch.

The funding milestone unlocks a "Stellar Cartography" room for all who have backed before it was hit. To be delivered when the upcoming Hangar "Room System" ships. $46 Million goal is disclosed to be "Updated Scanning Software", a backer reward picked by a poll on the last funding announcement letter.

For quite some time, it's been obvious that Cloud Imperium Games has been shifting gears to full development and gathering momentum toward release. Now hitting milestones almost effortlessly. Even if delays appear at the last minute, they will likely be brief at this point.
